CHIMNEY ROCK — Home of the internationally loved Chimney Rock Park (which recently became a North Carolina State Park), the community of Chimney Rock has dozens of sites that are, literally, picture-post-cardville. Summer picnics on the giant boulders in the Broad River, hikes on scenic mountain trails or just relaxing moments sitting on your deck overlooking the river with those majestic mountains in the background... Oh! you don't have a deck, here, yet? That's easy to arrange. We also have choice real estate for sale!

FOREST CITY — How about a downtown with sidewalks that you can walk down, streets you can cross safely, and trees, shrubs and lots of beautiful flowers? A downtown where you can see car shows, have fun at festivals (right downtown!) and even participate in street dancing? Hey, you can buy a house in Forest City for a lot less than so many other places I could name — and with low taxes to match.

LAKE LURE — To be brutal, Lake Lure is the Lake; no real down town. If you are wealthy — and fortunate — enough to afford one, the lakefront homes are what so many of us dream about. A drive around the west side of the lake on Memorial Drive (US-64/74A) is very revealing. And, as an additional reward, there is a great restaurant (with very relaxing view of the lake through their picture windows) on the south side of the lake at the intersection of NC-9. That view of Lake Lure is almost like looking at a Norwegian fiord.
   There are some great real estate values on the east side of Lake Lure. (You need to take Bills Creek Road and follow the signs.) There are concerted efforts by other developers to create similar communities. And that is the subject of an intense debate in the community of Lake Lure. Even if you do not intend to buy, Lake Lure is well worth a look.

RUTHERFORDTON — When I first saw Rutherfordton I was not favorably impressed. It is an old town and, at least the downtown, looks it. I called it the city of seven hills (no I didn't count them) and was lucky to find a parking spot three blocks away from the Chamber of Commerce. But what this old town has, and lots of, is flavor. The people greet you - a stranger - on the streets with smiles and they obviously mean it. Even the towns cops are eager to please (as long as you obey their laws, I guess). There are a few very attractive homes for sale in the very attractive residential areas - especially north of downtown. Rutherfordton is a town where you wouldn't mind raising kids.

SPINDALE — The communities on these pages are listed alphabetically so Spindale would have been last, anyway. But if not, I would have made it last. In Spindale there is Main Street with its (mostly) old buildings and atmosphere. Then there is the US-74-A parkway (freeway?) to the west with its new shopping centers, office parks and hotels. And, also on the west side, there is Isothermal Community College. I haven't viewed the campus close-up but from the highway, it is beautiful especially with the nicely landscaped lawn and pond. The college make Spindale very different from its two neighbors, Rutherfordton and Forest City. Young adults, especially college students, have a way of doing that. Most of the houses for sale are in more spaced out residential areas — almost rural in character. And, if you are on a budget, you'll love the prices and taxes. As a chap from Massachusetts remarked, "What taxes?"
